Classroom Reflection
One of my 3rd grade students came up to me and wanted to show me her story that she wrote. I was pleased to see that she wrote a short story on PowerPoint. Even though she is 8 years old, she is technologically advanced enough to work a program that I thought most 3rd graders didn't know about.
I am so excited to teach because the students in my classroom are so eager to learn about technology.

Assignment #1 Technology Literacy
Technology changes so much that it seems almost impossible to keep up. Before returning to school, I worked as an IT Coordinator. I was very fluent with computer and network technology, but now it seems that I need a refresher course since I have not been practicing. I have basic to intermediate knowledge of technology, but would like to enhance my skills. Technology is all around us, but I think it's important to grow with the technology. It seems that once a person becomes familiar with a program, another one is produced and has to be relearned. The most important skill to learning technology is the willingness to learn the changes that have occurred. The greatest skill that a teaching can teach their students when it comes to technology is the willingness to learn and experiment appropriately with technology. Technology changes. It's not as important to teach how to use technology as it is why.
The most important areas in technology that I would like to work with this semester are the technologies that have to do with special needs. All others are easy enough to learn because I am around them daily, but I have no prior knowledge of technologies that are in place for special needs students. I would like to add this to my portfolio so that can at least be exposed to technology that I don't see on a daily level.
Technology is important to the classroom. Children will be using it more and more as technology advances. It is more important for a teacher to have the skills and knowledge to equip the students with vital information. A teacher can creatively teach a lesson that will grasp a student's attention. Technology is not here to hinder education, but to enhance it. It should be utilized.
Students need to meet the NETS standards, but this cannot be done unless they are practicing the use of technology. A teacher needs to encourage students to use technology properly. There is nothing wrong with teaching a lesson using a computer. If anything, the student will only be more encouraged. I am teaching third grade, the use of science equipment is essential to their learning. They need to be able to use measurement devices and understand the basic concepts with using them.
A great idea that was in http://www.iste.org/inhouse/nets/cnets/students/pdf/NETS-S_Student_Profiles.pdf was to have the students create a media resource. I think it would be a great idea for students to talk to others on the webcam. They need to know that there is more to this world than Kirkland. They can interview others in different parts of the world. What a great way to teach Geography, or Social issues. This couldn't be done without the technology that we have today.
Another fun idea is to have the students digitally alter a media image. This can serve as creativity that couldn't be done without Photoshop, or other digital imaging software. Artwork can be expressed is many different ways. It can be surprising what children know, or what they will learn on their own with technology. I think it's important to give them the necessary tools, but to let them discover all of technologies capabilities on their own. It can be fun and rewarding.
