Students need to learn how to come up with the answer, not just what the answer is. I remember being in class and having to show my work for everything, but I never really understood why I had to do it that way.
Now days almost everything is done on the web. People can network with individuals from all over the world. My husband has a flikr account and talks with hundreds of people on a daily basis about photography. I can talk to friends from out of town and usually get a reply that same day.
Classes don't need paper anymore. Everything from homework to blogs can be posted on in the internet. Students and parents can have access to whatever the teacher wants. Students don't have to be bored listening to lectures, lessons can be interactive and engaging. Teachers can now even post class newslaters.
I think it would be fun for kids to do a podcast! Their parents can hear them over the internet and they can use their creativity. Grandparents can now hear their grandchildren over the internet.

I like your idea about having kids do podcasts. Not only would they get the experience.. but like you said parents and grandparents could see what they are up to. Great idea...
